My Printer, Cups and Linux

Automatic configuration of my several years(!!) old printer still doesn't work perfectly. So after an update the printer settings in cups had been changed and I could hardly find any solutions on the internet. So it might be useful to remember the following.

Requirements:

  • Linux 3.2.12 (Gentoo Linux)
  • Cups 1.5.2
  • hplip 3.12.6
  • HP Photosmart 7960

Configuration:

  • Hplip und cups 1.4+ use raw USB devices, so it requires usblp not to be loaded.
    /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: blacklist usblp
  • Cups USE variables:
    /etc/portage/package.use:
X acl avahi dbus filters gnutls java jpeg ldap linguas_de pam png python ssl threads tiff
  • Hplip USE variables:
    /etc/portage/package.use:
X acl hpcups kde libnotify qt4 snmp

When there is no printer installed or all printers had been deleted, plugging in the photosmart leads to an automatic installation and configuration via UDEV.
After that the printer is addressed at the URI

hp://usb/photosmart7900series?serial=CN38MXXXXXXX
a first page may be printed but after that the printing system stands still with the following entries in system log file:

kernel: usb 2-1: reset full-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd

hp[24895]: io/hpmud/musb.c 1421: unable to write data

hp:/usb/photosmart_7900_series?serial=CN38MXXXXXXX: 45 second io timeout

kernel: usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

Solution:

After deleting any of the automatically provided entries you have to manually create a new printer with the help of the cups backend

http://localhost:631/printers

The URI to use is slightly different than before:

usb://hp/photosmart%207900%20series?serial=CN38MXXXXXXX
I'm mystified why neither UDEV nor hplip or cups selects this working URI. Maybe somebody could explain?
